Tell us about your student-led transition team

A Surfside Student Ambassadors is assigned to each new military student upon enrollment. Ambassadors meet the student before school on their first day, provide a guided tour of the campus, walk the new military student to each class and introduce the new student to each teacher at the beginning of each period. Ambassadors sit with the new military student during lunch and make sure they locate their ride home for the day. Ambassadors are encouraged to monitor the success of the Military student transition, connecting with them between classes and during lunch, over the next week or until the military student appears to have formed friendships on campus.

What supports do you offer for military ese children?

Military students are assigned a Case Manager to assist with supports and transitions. Case Managers monitor student grades, attendance and goal progress daily or weekly, depending on the need of the Military ESE student. Surfside has multiple classroom structures available to Military ESE students to include General Education, Inclusion, Resource and Self-Contained.

What military recognition events do you have planned?

We participate in Purple Up Day, Veteran’s Day, and always give End of the Year recognition to our military students.

How do military children access mental health services on your campus?

Military students can access mental health services through emailing their School Counselor, contacting the MFLAC, coming to the Guidance Office, requesting a digital SmartPass on their Chromebook, parent phone call to the Guidance Office, or through a request for a Community of Care Referral.
